PE M/D A/S - Three Steps....

PE M/D A/S - How It Works - Video

Example 1

Example 1:

We need to follow the order of operations which is PE M/D A/S. In the expression 26 - (24 - 5 +3), we have to highlight the parenthesis first and follow the order from there. Next we look inside the parenthesis which is the 24 - 5 + 3. The next step is to subtract 24 and 5 which is 19. Now we have 26 - (19 + 3). Then we have 19 + 3 left in the parenthesis, which is 22. Now we have 26 - 22 and that is 4.

Example 2

Example 2:

We need to follow the order of operations which is PE M/D A/S. In the expression 6(8 - 3) x 2, we have to highlight the parenthesis first and follow the order from there. Next we look inside the parenthesis which is the 8 - 3. The result of 8 - 3 is 5. Now we have 7(5) x 2. The important part is to realize that if a number is next to a parenthesis, it means multiplication. So we can re-write it as 7 x 5 x 2. So the next step is multiply 7 and 5, which is 35. Now we have 35 x 2, and that is 70.

Example 3

Example 3:

We need to follow the order of operations which is PE M/D A/S. In the expression 18 ÷ (5 + 4) x 3, we have to highlight the parenthesis first and follow the order from there. Next we look inside the parenthesis, which is the 5 + 4. The result of 5 + 4 is 9. Now we have 18 ÷ 9 x 3. So let's read it from left to right, which means we divide 18 and 9, which is 2 and now we have 2 x 3. The result of that is 6.

Example 4

Example 4:

We need to follow the order of operations which is PE M/D A/S. In the expression (25 - 7) ÷ (4 x 2), we have to highlight the parenthesis first and follow the order from there. In this case we have two sets of parenthesis. So how do we know which one to do first? It doesn't matter, but I usually go from left to right. Next we look inside the parenthesis on the left, which is the 25 - 7. The result of 25 - 7 is 18. Now we have to look at the parenthesis on the right which is (4 x 2) and multiply the two numbers inside, which is 8. So now we have 18 ÷ 6, and the result of that is 3.

Example 5

Example 5:

We need to follow the order of operations which is PE M/D A/S. In the expression 8 + 6 ÷ 2 - 1 x 3. This time we don't have any parenthesis so are next step is exponents but we don't have any of those either. And remember since multiplication and division are inverses they are same when we are talking about order of operations. Let's read it from left to right, so 6 ÷ 2 is first and that is 3. Now we have 8 + 3 -1 x 3. So now we do the multiplication, which is 1 x 3, and that is 3. Now we have 8 + 3 - 3. Continuing reading it from left to right is 8 + 3, which is 11, and finally we subtract the last 3. The answer is 8.
